Bike Plan

Bicycles / pedestrians / transit - for Kailua's Urban Core

Building on the Hawaii State Master Bike Plan, and the Oahu Bike Plan currently under development, the Kailua Bike Plan seeks to enhance the bicycling facilities and atmosphere already present in Kailua Town. The flat topography of Kailua Town is ideal for shopping, dining, or recreation using bicycles.

Elements of the Kailua Bike Plan:

  1)   Connect the "gaps" in the existing Hawaii Master Bike Plan, to provide a continuous, safe, and signed bicycle network into and through Kailua Town, connecting greater Oahu and greater Kailua to the Kailua Urban Core;

  2)   Slow vehicle traffic speeds on Hekili, Hahani, and Uluniu Streets, and future vehicle access aisles in the central business core so that bicycles may share the roadway with vehicles safely;

  3)   Plan bicycle routes that avoid the major intersections and most heavily trafficked streets;

  4)   Define "hubs" for bicycle parking where cyclists become pedestrians in the central business core;

  5)   Create wherever possible, paths off of the roadway for bicycles/ pedestrians.
